Friends was established in 1977 to support the Lincoln-Lancaster Women's Commission and was one of the first "Friends" organizations in the country. The Lincoln-Lancaster Women's Commission was defunded in 2007, but Mayor Chris Beutler formed the Mayor's Commission on Women because there is a continuing need in our community for women's voices to be heard.
The current Commission consists of 15 women and men who advise the Mayor and his office on the issues that pertain to women and families in Lincoln. The Friends of the Lincoln-Lancaster Women's Commission is now the Friends of the Mayor's Commission on Women.
Friends is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and is a group of volunteers who make up the fundraising arm of the new Women's Commission.
Since 1977, Friends has given financial support to the events and activities of the Commission. Through the years, Friends has also published information and sponsored educational events as a community service.
Friends sponsors the annual Women & Money Conference. Support from Friends as well as financial contributions from interested community companies allow women in our community to attend sessions to learn more about taking control of their finances with information on a wide variety of topics.
Friends is a membership-based organization with a volunteer board of directors and officers. Anyone who supports women in the Lincoln area is invited to join. A membership form is available for download here.
